Hiccups

Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.

Thanks for the hiccup cures ladies. I'm on my third round of jarring, painful hiccups. Doesn't bode well for the rest of the day. This latest round (occurring as I write) has lasted at least 30 minutes. I hurt. Keep the cures coming. Many people have suggested a spoonful of sugar, which I've done in the past. So, I think I'm going to high-tail it upstairs right now and get me a scoopful.

I'm desperate.

Hugs,
Amy

  1. I do the upside down drinking that works every time for me, but my sister has this cure...take a deep breath...deep, deep, deep as much as you can...and then slurp in just a tad more and hold it for a bit...breathe out slowly and then do it again...and then one more time. She said this relaxes the diaphragm muscle. Sure hope it works...I absolutely despise the hiccups.

  2. Amy, I have a friend that showed us a cure for hiccups in class one night, worked instantly!! Have a glass of water, with a straw in it, then with your hands, apply pressure to the temples and in front of your ears, both sides, while taking a drink of water through the straw. I know it sounds weird, and I never would have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it work, and more then once!

  3. Try taking a mouthful of water, then plugging your nose and your ears and swallowing.

    It works (nearly) every time.

  4. Just one more cure.........take a teaspoon of peanut butter and turn the spoon upside down on your tongue and slowly eat the peanut butter. It really works and is much yummier (a maybe a bit better for ya) than a spoonful of sugar.

Sorry to chime in so late, but maybe you can try it next time.

    Hugs,
    Melissa

  5. How weird. I've had the hiccups yesterday and today. It usually comes about because of stress for me. On really stressful days, I'll get them 5 times in one day. Hope yours go away.

  6. I stand by the sugar cure most of the time. Odd as it may sound, we actually have people come to the ER with intractable hiccups- to the point they cannot sleep, eat or really function due to the continuous hiccups for 2-3 days! We give then intravenous Thorazine which is, also, given as an antipsychotic medication. Just a bit of hiccup trivia for the day!

  7. Well, I hope by now your hiccups are gone. When DD was little and get the hiccups, I would just tickle her until they were gone. I think it had something to do with laughing so hard, that she was breathing differently.
