A Reject

This is a card I submitted to a magazine publication a little while back that obviously wasn't picked up. Never heard back from them, so up it goes to be shared on my blog instead!

I can't seem to figure out what it is some of these pubs are looking for. Is it because I'm a relative "unknown" in the stamping/paper crafting arena? If that's the case, how can you ever get yourself noticed? Because of my frustration, I recently enlisted some advice from the highly published, very talented Daniela Dobson (For the First Time) to get her take on trying to get published. Daniela was such a sweetie and emailed me back immediately with some great advice and kind words.

So, I hope you guys enjoy and love what the pub obviously did not! I love this card. That's why I sent it to the pub. It was actually originally made for the Circle Challenge over at Caardvarks, but I liked it so much I thought I would try and submit it to the pub instead. I guess you win some and lose some, uh? I actually thought I might have a good chance with this one, but I was wrong. Isn't that funny, what we love others aren't so crazy about, and often times what we DON'T love, others do! Daniela said that happens to her. She recently submitted a card that she didn't like AT ALL, yet the publication picked it up and published it! Go figure!

We had a great 4th yesterday! What a crazy busy day, though! We were running from the break of day til the dark of night, I tell ya. Our ribs and chicken were mouth watering delish. I didn't overeat too badly, but I'm still afraid to go to my WW meeting this week......!

Today is going to be recouperation day. The only thing I have to do is get my allergy shots. Maybe I'll stop in at a sale or two. But then it's stamp time. I've got to get some cards made!!!!

Hugs,
Amy

  3. I liked the card. And I too share the frustration of the pubs. You have to send the right work in at the right time for the right person to see. One time, one of the mags published a pre-printed card with floss tied with one charm and got published. That angers me to no end, because there are so many talented work out there, and they picked that. So, I do share your frustration. But gotta keep trying.

I've learned alot from you and other ladies so keep up the good work.

amy, have you ever submitted to Simply Sentiments? its a smaller mag and is a little less well known than some of the others. Sometimes if you send in a few that kind of go together that might be helpful too. (at least that what it appears by looking, I've never submitted before). You just never know what they are looking for- keep at it!

  6. Wonderful card! I too cannot figure out what the magazines want.I've been published several times, but lately, all I get is rejections. This time, I sent in to a different magazine. So far they are interested...

  7. Oh, Amy... this is GORGEOUS! What a fabulous card - that magazine is missing out! I can't seem to get the right mix when sending to publications either. Oh well, I enjoy making cards too much to let it bug me too much. Hope you have a great day of recuperation.

Amy, the best mags to submit to are all of the Stampington publications. I have been published every time I have submitted and your work is way beyond what I submitted. Stampers Sampler, Take Ten, Somerset Studio are far superior mags to the others and I am sure your work would be published. When I buy the other mags I wonder what they are thinking - their samples are so simple.

  9. Amy- That card is stunning so I can certainly empathize with your frustration. I've never been brave enough to submit so count yourself already ahead of the game. For what it's worth, published or not, your one of the Big Names in my book!

  10. Don't feel rejected at all Amy, your card is WONDERFUL! I can't seem to figure out their thought process either. I am relatively unknown too and it is hard to get noticed....keep trying! In the mean time I am glad you shared this so we could all give it a little love.

  11. I think it's a great card, too! Love the colors and the overall design! Maybe the colors didn't fit into the theme they were looking for, or they already had a circle card or two? Who knows, but I'd try it again with a different pub. Never know! Hugs!

Try not to get too down about it. Some things just defy explanation and this is one of them.

Oh Amy, you know exactly how I feel about this. (right time, right place, right color, right shape, right person, right magazine...it all needs to come together) But it will...you just keep submitting...(and I will to - I'm in the same boat) Some day those magazines will see your stuff and think..."THIS has got to go in...it is PERFECT!" It WILL happen.

I love your card. Good publications for you would be (Papercrafts, Cards, and CardMaker) Good Luck!

  16. This card is adorable, I love it!!! Keep submitting and it will happen, it takes time.
Not really an expert, I just submit, because if you don't then you don't have a chance.

  18. Your card is georgous, their loss. Thank you for sharing it with us!

I don't "get it" either. I did win 3rd place in a card making contest for a stamping company back in April. When they e mailed me it about knocked me over. What??

I don't enter or submit anything anymore with any expectations.

  19. I love this card and all your other creations. It is their loss, and our gain. Your blog is one I check pretty much every day, as I love everything you make. Keep submitting, I am sure they will realize your talent sooner or later....

  20. Hi Amy, I understand your frustration too. I submitted about 7 cards to Cards magazine a while back and the only one they picked was the one I liked the least and really didn't even put much effort into. You just never know what they want. Don't stop submitting though, your work is gorgeous and so is this card!!!

Hi Amy, I just so amazed that this gorgeous card did not get selected for publication! When you see some that are chosen, it does cause you to wonder. Your card is beautifully designed, unique in design, fantastically color coordinated...it is beyond devine...maybe you should have included a pair of glasses with the card...perhaps they are near blind! LOL...I love it! Barb g
